Synopsis
The year is 1963. Wally Pop is a music producer with his own studio, but no immediate prospects for success on the charts. Wally 'steals' the idea of establishing an all-girl group as a vehicle for marketing merchandise, from Veronica. He enlists the financial help of Sir Ralph, a weapons dealer. His faithful assistant, Jenny, puts The Charades together, but unfortunately Sir Ralph insists that his daughter, Lulu, is to be included in the group. But Lulu can't sing. In the 1960's, and dare we suggest, even now, clever sound engineers, like Gyro, overcame this problem by getting singing groups to mime during concerts.
Two Russian Spies Olga and Dirmtri are trying to steal Sir Ralph's bag of secrets, by gaining employment in Wally's studio. A hapless reporter, Clark Kent, who is trying to live down his unfortunate name, inadvertently foils the Russians twice in hilarious scenes.
The desperate Russians decide to kidnap Lulu to ransom her to her father. Two scenes of riotous fun ensue when they lock themselves, and their hostage, in their own dungeon, where they expect to starve to death. However they are rescued by the unintelligent intelligence agent Ray Abbotson, who has been posing as a songwriter in Wally's studio.
The final make or break concert for the Charades is about to start when Gyro discovers that the all important tape to which the girls would mime, has been stolen by Veronica, exacting her revenge on Wally. Jenny is persuaded to step into the breach and of course the concert is a success and the Charades are on their way. But there is a twist in the tale which leaves audiences literally gasping.
